Murrieta Wedding- Monteleone Meadows

June 30th, 2009 by Zach | 15 Comments

Dustin and Katrina

By now, you will definitely recognize the gate in these photos! If you can’t tell, we’re on the preferred vendors list at Monteleone Meadows, so we get to shoot there quite a bit. Here’s Dustin and Katrina- a sweet couple that were so fun to take photos of! Katrina was willing to do anything! She wasn’t concerned about getting her dress dirty or grass stained, all she cared about was getting great photos. I love this attitude. Your dress is for you, not you for your dress. We’re able to do so much more when brides are willing to let their dress touch the ground. Another thing we are stoked about is the groomsmen photos. Dustin really wanted something different than Monteleone Meadows for the guy photos. Something a little cooler. He pointed us to this photo from a past wedding of what he was wanting-
boys

We weren’t sure if there was anywhere around Monteleone where something like this could be accomplished. Dustin was going to keep his eye out for a spot. Well, the day of the wedding came and he still hadn’t found somewhere to do it. Zach and I split up- he took photos of the girls, while I went over to the guys house to take photos of them getting ready. This is something we don’t normally do, but happened to do this one day. It turned out to be a lucky break, because when I was driving back to Monteleone, I saw this amazing haystack in a field, literally 2 minutes away from Monteleone. The groom was following me over to the site, so when we parked I asked him what he thought and he loved it. So, we picked up Zach, all got back in our cars and went over there. A lesson to all photographers to always think outside of the box (and the wedding venue.) Congrats to Katrina and Dustin! On a side note, we just finished our 16th wedding this past weekend! We’re about half way through our weddings for this year, woo hoo!!!!! And 2010 is already shaping up to be an incredibly awesome year. We’re so thankful for a job we love.

The aforementioned groomsmen photos! (It reminds me of the movie Twister- I feel like a tornado is going to come take them away.)

Dustin and Katrina wrote their own vows. Katrina went first and said how one word came to her mind when she thought of Dustin, and that was thankful. When Dustin went he said, “When I think about you Katrina, one word comes to mind. Ironically, that word is thankful!” It was a cute, funny moment.

The bridesmaid dresses were gorgeous, extremely flattering and simply adorable. But, you won’t be able to get your hands on any, as they were hand made by the bride’s mom.

That black and white should have completed photo time with the bride and groom, but it didn’t. As Zach and I were eating dinner outside, the light was perfect. He started getting antsy and kept saying, “Gosh, this light is beautiful. Maybe I should just go grab them real quick to take a few photos on the dock. No, I won’t. Ah, but it’s so perfect out! OK! I’m doing it!” So he went and asked Dustin and Katrina if they were up for it and they totally were! Zach is just one of those people that is always an artist and constantly creating in his head. He can’t ever shut it off.

Somehow in all this chaos of weddings, we found time to do a family session! Scott and his family came out early on a Saturday morning- (9am!) to do this shoot. Zach and I are not morning people…at all. So, we were shocked when we saw a whole other world awake and doing things! We decided to go to breakfast after at the Pancake House. SO good! It was one of those, “We should really do this more often, but then you never do” moments. The closest we’ll get to going to breakfast is a late night run to Denny’s. I don’t know what it is, but we’re both total night owls. I get some of my most inspirational moments after the clock strikes twelve. Especially late night cleaning frenzies. I suddenly have to clean the whole house at 1am. Anyways, speaking of being up late, we should really get to bed. We’re off to shoot another wedding tomorrow in our hood. We don’t have to show up till 4:30pm though. Woo hoo! (I love this wedding already!)Enjoy the family shoot- there’s some fun ones in there!

Grandpa Hodges 80th Birthday

June 25th, 2009 by Zach | 2 Comments

My Grandpa turned 80 a few weeks ago and we made the trip up to Sacramento to visit him for a bit with my dad and sister at a restaurant of his choosing: Olive Garden. My Grandpa Hodges is, well, probably one of the most fiesty-yet-hilarious 80 year olds you’d ever meet, and it was really great to get to see him. His real name is Clarence, which he hates, so he tells everyone to call him Doug, which somehow turned into Doc, which has got to be the coolest nick-name ever. We also got to meet my Great Aunt Mary, who I haven’t seen since I was 7. I say “got to meet” because I really can’t remember meeting her the first time, although she reminded me that I was really into this pirate lego ship that I had made, which I had TOTALLY forgotten about until she said that! Man, I did love that thing. It had canons that sort of worked. Anyways, Aunt Mary found me on Facebook and Twitter a while back and when I looked at her birthday I was impressed beyond all reason. No family members in their 60′s are finding me on Facebook and Twitter but her. She was surprised that I recognized her when they arrived and I showed her that I had her facebook profile loaded on my phone. Later she complained about how I don’t really participate on Facebook. (Lovingly/Sarcastically of course) Not your everyday “Great Aunt” sort of experience, but it was awesome. Plus she’s SUPER funny and reads our blog, what’s not to like?

This trip was right on the heels of a double-wedding weekend, which really made it brutal, but it was such a worthwhile experience. We take pictures of other people’s family, friends and cherished memories but it’s such a different thing to take photos of your own family. There’s a meaning and a connection that just can’t be had taking photos of anything else, at least for me. It was a great reminder not to get so caught up in frantic mayhem of life that I miss the things I’m living and working for. With Mt. Post Production and the Valley of a Gazillion weddings before me right now, it was a very welcome distraction.

“I’m still here!” was his motto for turning 80.

So apparently my Grandpa has started making these awesome canes, one of which he was showing me here.

I said, “one more with just the hot guys.” I think the idea of this photo was lost on him, which kinda makes me like it more. I love the, “What the heck are you doing” look on his face.

Wedding in Nipomo, CA

June 19th, 2009 by Zach | 5 Comments

We love traveling for weddings! It’s more like vacationing than work. There’s just something about being out of town that refreshes and rejuvinates us. Even if we’re just an hour away in San Diego or LA, we always feel like it’s a mini vacation. Jimi and Tawny invited us to shoot their wedding in beautiful Nipomo, CA, just a short drive south of San Luis Obispo. It’s such a unique place, because there are farms and farmland everywhere, but then suddenly the beach is there too. Seems like the two don’t go together. Jimi and Tawny were so fun to work with! Keep coming back for many more wedding blogs to come (two in the wings and off to another one Saturday!) The end of June will be our sort of half way point through our year- with 15 weddings of 31 completed! Woo hoo! Congrats Jimi and Tawny! Oh ya, and the photo contest is officially OVER! The grand prize winner is Photo #8 and the 2nd place winner is Photo #4! Congrats winners, enjoy your big prints!!

They had a peacock theme to their wedding (seems to be a trend right now, you’ll see in the next blog.)

Love this cute shot of Tawny and Jimi- they’re both pretty reserved people, so this is a small glimpse into their beautiful relationship.

The dj had a catastrophe with his microphone- it broke…and he didn’t have a back-up. So, the entire night, speeches and all, were spoken into the headphones you see in Tawny’s hand, that were jerry-rigged to be a microphone. (Quick thinking on the djs part- always always always have back-up everything!)

Coronado Tandem Bike Photos! (Alert: Awesome date idea)

June 16th, 2009 by Zach | 5 Comments

Remember when the blog wasn’t just wedding after wedding, e-session upon e-session? WELL REMEMBER NO MORE! We do have lives outside of taking pictures of other people’s lives, and I’m constantly taking photos, it’s just that processing those photos usually takes a back seat to paid work. But I got fed up with the mounting pile of fun photos recently and processed some of them, starting with these.

Katelyn came up with this at first, when trying to put together the ultimate “Zach day off.” (Do I have the best wife ever or what?) A ferry ride, followed by a bike ride on an island, followed by dinner in downtown San Diego. I voted HECK YES and we had our awesome date. We both agreed it was super fun but would have been even better with friends. Fast-forward a few months, my sister comes out to visit with her boyfriend and my brother-in-law’s girlfriend also comes out to visit, so we hatch a plan to do our same date but with 3 couples this time. It was epic, as you can see below.

So, if you have a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiance, husband or wife who doesn’t read this blog, you can TOTALLY steal this date and use it as your own and score mondo points. Did I mention it’s pretty dang cheap? Here’s the info:

And without further ado, the photos…

The tandem bike thing is harder than it looks, but it’s not too bad once you get the hang of it. Getting the hang of it, for us, involved me trying to get off the bike to make this photo and falling terribly with the camera crashing on the cement!

Coronado Island Trip

Only the clear filter was damaged, which was nice. A reminder to have these on all your lenses! (The hood would have saved everything even more)

Anyways, this photo cost us a clear filter (but a funny memory of me falling).

We rode the bike to Hotel Del Coronado, a STUNNING place that I’m dying for someone to get married at and hire us for! (Hint hint)

Then we headed to downtown Coronado and got some AMAZING lattes.

Wedding at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs.

June 10th, 2009 by Zach | 13 Comments

May was a nice, light wedding month for us- with only 2 of them. Mark and Kenna got married at the end of May at the beautiful Riviera Resort in Palm Springs. Even for May it was in the high 90s, but luckily only the ceremony was outside and most of the appeal of the Riviera Resort is the insane decorations on the inside. This venue was very different from the outdoorsy, green weddings we normally shoot, so it was a nice change of scenery for us. Mark and Kenna are an amazing couple that were truly in love and you can really see that through the photos. June is now in full swing- 4 weddings, and lots of family shoots and engagement shoots, so keep an eye on the blog as it will be hopping here in a few weeks.

Kenna read her vows from her iphone. I love how she did <3 for heart

Kenna’s dad was awesome! He used to be a wedding photographer himself, and actually stopped while he was walking her down the aisle to take a photo with his point and shoot!

They did a ceremony tradition called “jumping the broom” It originated from slaves who weren’t allowed to marry, so they came up with their own way of making it official- jumping over a broom.

Wedding at Temecula Under the Oaks!

June 2nd, 2009 by Zach | 5 Comments

This wedding at Temecula Under the Oaks completed our April madness month (only now to be possibly trumped by JUNE madness month!) David (the groom) is a great friend of mine. I grew up tightly knit with his family. He has two older sisters who are mine and my sister’s age and he is close to my brothers age, so we were a perfect match with their family for childhood friends. We’re still great friends to this day- both his sisters have babies- and now it was David’s turn to tie the knot, leaving my brother, Scott, the only one of the 6 kids left unmarried. (Scott’s only 19, so this is in no way a dis to him) You’ll remember David and Lindsay from their kick butt engagement shoot (of which I threw in a few of my favs) The venue was just incredible. It’s a nice lady that runs it on her property and she only does 1 wedding a month, just to pay for the water bill of all the landscape that she has. It was beautiful- nice and tucked away in the back hills of Temecula. This wedding quite possibly had the most legendary 2 lines that I have ever heard uttered at a wedding…the first of which was from Lindsay, when her mom told her that she would be helping her get her wedding dress on, Lindsay said, “Well then there’s something I need to tell you…I got a new tattoo.” And the second was from Lindsay’s sister, who, during her toast, told her mom that she needed to , “Lay off the wine.” Best moments of a wedding EVER. VOTE for David and Lindsay’s engagement photo down in the contest below! (Still going on, by the way!) Congrats David and Lindsay!

David’s dad married them and this is his hilarious reaction when Lindsay pulls out her 4 page long vows. I kept this one up on the screen for a few hours and every time we looked at it we’d crack up!
