Instead of doing the usual highlights reel of all our weddings, this year I want to highlight all of my favorite moments both in weddings and in our personal life. Read More…
Wedding in Maui, Hi!
We’ve had the opportunity to travel all over for weddings- Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, Texas, Napa, San Francisco, Mammoth- and now Maui! Unfortunately, I was 8 months pregnant and unable to fly- so Zach took along our good friend and awesome Portland photographer- Tyler Gould to assist him in my absence. This was quite the trip for Zach, who missed his flight after spending 4+ hours in traffic on his way to LAX, then broke his new phone while in Maui, then came home to his car battery dead in a remote parking lot, and now with no phone to call for a tow truck. BUT, the wedding was amazing. Read More…
Wedding at the Appleford Estate in Philadelphia, PA!
We love traveling and were so excited when Pat and Ashley contacted us to shoot their wedding in Philadelphia! They flew us out for their beautiful wedding at the Appleford Estate just outside of Philadelphia. We flew in a few days early and spent some time in Philly, exploring the historic sites and eating ridiculously good Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. I was a bit skeptical about the sandwiches, “Come on, they really can’t be that much better in Philly,” I thought. Read More…
Maternity Photos in Seattle’s Volunteer Park
On our way back down from Canada we stopped in Seattle and did some maternity photos with Katelyn’s sister Megan and her husband Ben at Volunteer Park. It was pretty cold and Megan was REALLY wanting some cupcakes from Cupcake Royal, (can you blame her? They’re soooo good!) but she stuck it out anyways and we had a great time. This was only a few days ago and already we’re getting text updates about how close to being here this baby really is! We’re gonna have a niece super soon!!!
Whistler!
Today was our first day of being in one place all day and it was glorious. We slept in, but then hit the snow hard, tube style. (That one time I broke my arm on the bunny hill kinda scarred me for life on snowboarding. True story.) I won’t kill you with super long stories this time, I’ll let the photos do (most) of the talking. Read More…
Oooooh Canada!
We’ve been planning this sweet vacation for a few months now, here’s what it was supposed to go like: We’d take a 3 day cruise to Vancouver (a gloriously cheap cruise I might add), spend a day in vancouver, then take a train to Seattle, spend a few days there, then fly to Oakland where my family is and where we also have a wedding and an engagement shoot, then take a train the rest of the way down. Well, that was all supposed to start 3 days ago, on Saturday.
A Portland Wedding
For any of you out there that dread having your picture taken and slightly despise photographers for putting you through the torture of it, I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy this blog. Ironically enough, Zach is one of those people who hates having their picture taken. But, at this wedding, the tables were turned. Read More…
Coronado Tandem Bike Photos! (Alert: Awesome date idea)
Remember when the blog wasn’t just wedding after wedding, e-session upon e-session? WELL REMEMBER NO MORE! We do have lives outside of taking pictures of other people’s lives, and I’m constantly taking photos, it’s just that processing those photos usually takes a back seat to paid work. But I got fed up with the mounting pile of fun photos recently and processed some of them, starting with these.
Katelyn came up with this at first, when trying to put together the ultimate “Zach day off.” (Do I have the best wife ever or what?) A ferry ride, followed by a bike ride on an island, followed by dinner in downtown San Diego. I voted HECK YES and we had our awesome date. We both agreed it was super fun but would have been even better with friends. Fast-forward a few months, my sister comes out to visit with her boyfriend and my brother-in-law’s girlfriend also comes out to visit, so we hatch a plan to do our same date but with 3 couples this time. It was epic, as you can see below.
So, if you have a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiance, husband or wife who doesn’t read this blog, you can TOTALLY steal this date and use it as your own and score mondo points. Did I mention it’s pretty dang cheap? Here’s the info:

And without further ado, the photos…
This is the ferry you take over.
The tandem bike thing is harder than it looks, but it’s not too bad once you get the hang of it. Getting the hang of it, for us, involved me trying to get off the bike to make this photo and falling terribly with the camera crashing on the cement!
Only the clear filter was damaged, which was nice. A reminder to have these on all your lenses! (The hood would have saved everything even more)
Anyways, this photo cost us a clear filter (but a funny memory of me falling).
We rode the bike to Hotel Del Coronado, a STUNNING place that I’m dying for someone to get married at and hire us for! (Hint hint)
Then we headed to downtown Coronado and got some AMAZING lattes.
The light got prettier so we redid this shot on the way back, sans the falling.
Waiting for the ferry.
Ferry ride back, mmmmm.
Crossing the street snapshot.
And now, PART II, the triple date!
This is much harder than it looks. I tried to do this with Katelyn after we got this photo and I couldn’t! We almost crashed a few times trying. Kudos to Scott and Jessica!
My sister is the best.
Crab grass.
All the Hodges in this photo are not wearing sunglasses. Weird eh?
Taryn grabbed this one, I LOOOOOOVE IT.
Hello Seattle
We just got back from our all time favorite city in the world, Seattle. We were up shooting the wedding of Drew and Shannon, which was on Valentines Day, and decided to make a vacation out of it! We visited all of our friends and spots that we love! After the wedding, we headed to 5 Spot, OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT! So even though we did work on Valentines, it was still awesome. Here are a few of our favorite places in Seattle if you’re ever heading there:
Cupcake Royale
Lockspot Cafe
5 Spot
Discovery Park
Stumptown Coffee
That’s just to name a few! The wedding photos turned out so rad. We’re excited because the wedding started later in the evening (almost 8pm) so all of our photos were done at night, which made for some very different photos then we normally do, but so very awesome. You especially have to check out the photo of Zach’s spiderman stance. He’ll do anything it takes to get the shot!
On a side note, Seattle was FREEZING. Oh my goodness, I am Californiaized for sure, because I had to wear like 5 layers just to stay warm! A blog with all of our personal photos is coming soon! We edit paid work first!
Zach’s spiderman pose which he did to get the shot under this photo
this one
We both like this one, a bit different. Thanks to Andrew Shepherd for the idea!
this is one of my (katelyn) favs
This was hilarious! the ring bearer kept falling asleep and then he’d jump up really quick and the pillow would go flying! This happened about 4 times before the grooms mom motioned for him to come sit with her.

This is another one of my favs!
Just a funny one of Zach that I took! nothing cool or arty about it.
Snow Day
Zach and I take Thursdays off, since being photographers pretty much means that your weekends are always booked. So Thursday is like “normal people’s” Saturdays. Usually Thursdays consist of meaning to get out of the house and do something, but noon rolls around and we’re still laying around in our pjs drinking our “morning” lattes. Morning is a loose term for us around here. It pretty much means whenever we wake up. (I once updated my facebook status to say “Drinking my morning latte” at 1pm. Still haven’t lived that one down) So, THIS Thursday we were bound and determined to get out of the house and do something! We planned a day up in Big Bear to go inner tubing in the snow. Our freakin rad friends Breezy and Hank came along, even though we didn’t invite them until midnight the night before. AND, they have a 6 week old (adorable) baby. Could they get any more awesome? They bundled Adalia up, and along with my brother and his friend, we all went up to Big Bear for a very needed day out!
Inner Tubing in Big Bear is $25 for the whole day. That’s seriously a bargain. It is so much fun and isn’t quite the commitment that snowboarding would be. We definitely recommend it. We can’t wait to take the future Hodges’ children inner tubing. Definitely cheaper than a day at Disneyland.
